SUMMARY:
Walking
By Faith: Fact Or Fiction is a diverse collection of fiction and drama
exploring the thin line between faith, fiction, and reality that people
continuously encounter in their journey through life. It highlights timely 21st century issues, trials and triumphs. Walking By
Faith: Fact Or Fiction, unapologetically demonstrates how people -- especially
during hard times -- can check their doubt at the door and
instead replace it with unshakable and enduring faith! It stresses, in particular, the spirit of
African –Americans to prevail in the face of life’s most challenging
times. Furthermore, it emphasizes the universal
message that one's history, beliefs and faith are jewels connecting the
lessons of the past to the hope of the future.

BOOK CONTENTS - SHORT STORIES & PLAYS (SUMMARIES):
Walking By Faith: Fact Or Fiction is a thought-provoking collection of fiction and drama focusing on timely 21st century issues. It consists of 7 short stories and 2 plays. Below are summaries of some of the works appearing in the collection:
A
RELIC FROM MY PAST
You’ve just been diagnosed with cancer at your
absolute prime in your life. But that – if you can imagine – becomes the
lesser of your worries when you discover
your whole life has been one adulterous
lie – compliments of your parents! This
is exactly the dilemma that grasps
prominent socialite, Stephanie Wellington, by the jugular,
paralyzing her with fear and desperation.
Given her circumstances, the elevator only goes up. It’s up to her to jump on and actually take the ride.
THE
BLESSED RETURN
In an allegorical tale, The Blessed Return
features the resurrected spirits of three of the most memorable Civil
Rights leaders in American history – Martin Luther King, Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer,
and Malcolm X. These
Spiritual Superhero Crusaders have their work waiting in droves as
they return to America --21st
century style – on a mission to save,
heal and renew Earth’s troubled souls.
THE
FAITHFUL FORTY
It is 1932 – the midst of the Great Depression –
one of America’s bleakest periods. Yet
in the midst of such darkness
stood 40 faithful servants ready to do
God’s will: establish a new church in
His honor. This story is
based on some of the actual
struggles and triumphs that those brave
original Founders of the Canaan Baptist
Church of Christ (home of Civil Rights leader and
Pastor Emeritus, the Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker)
endured. When all hope was gone, there
was God, still shining in the midst of them!
THE LIFE GIVER
Sometimes
Life gives and at other times it takes away, unapologetically with strength
and authority. But what
do you do when it robs you of
your dignity and self-respect, leaving you defenseless as the silent victim of elder abuse. All hopes of redemption are shattered when the abuser is your own flesh and blood – your own seed.
CLOTEAL, a once beautiful and proud member of New Orleans’ upper echelon,
is consumed with shame and guilt regarding this new role her daughter, EVENIA, has relegated her
to.
BOOK EXCERPT:
A
man hanged himself today, down the street from where I live. He was twenty-four – and miserable, so they
say.
I’ll
be forty-four if I make it to the end of next week. I guess I should be grateful for these two score and almost four
years that I’ve struggled through, but then again, I’m not a religious
person. Neither was my mother.
Any
way – tomorrow’s her anniversary. My
mother. I meant the anniversary of her
death. Thirty-five years it’s been. How time flies!
There
were many things we never got to do that other mothers and daughters do. In actuality, we had only eight years
together…
To
this day I haven’t forgiven her, and I guess I never will. I think my father, whom we call Judge,
blames her too, but then, we never discussed it.
I
look up in admiration at the moon glow that lights my path and glistens on the
back of each incoming wave…I then look down at my trembling hands and pause yet
again before removing the fragile, unsealed envelope from my left pocket.
It
appears at one time to have been sealed, but after thirty-five years perhaps
the glue had evaporated. On the
envelope is written, To My Darling
Daughter – With Love Forever, Mama. .. The letter is dated July 10, 1970…
Judge gave it to me three days after Mama’s funeral. It’s taken most of my life to gather the courage to read her
letter.
.
Dear Stephanie,
Life is sometimes brutally unfair. It has robbed us of
much
time together. There’s so much I want to say, but time is
not on my side.
As I lie in this hospital bed, I look over at Judge. Darling, there’s much I want to tell you, but treasured memories of you keep… Sorry, someone’s at the door. It’s just Nurse Stevens.
But what crossed my mind was
one day shortly after your seventh birthday.
You were in the attic all dressed up in one of my dresses, high heels,
hat, gloves, fur, and earrings. Well, much to
my surprise, you also had one of your father’s cigarettes and claimed that you
were imitating Bette Davis when you set the attic on fire. I tanned your rear end good that day, and
that was the only time you ever threatened to run away from home. (Of course, you didn’t!)
Honey, I’d give anything to
be alive to see you reach adulthood, graduate from high school and college, get
married, have kids, but it’s not to be.
Many a day I have pondered over whether I should reveal certain truths
to you. Honey, this is a difficult
decision for me, but there are things you need to know.
child. Judge had a son out of wedlock, while still married to me, two
years before your were born. Of course,
our marriage was never the same, but there’s more.
knows, and after I got sick,
I couldn’t tell him for your sake, because I
know you will need him.
I know this comes as a shock
to you. The only reason I told you is
because you deserve to know the truth, but regardless of the mistakes Judge and
I have made in the past, we still love…
I don’t believe this! How could they do this to me? One minute I know who I am, and the next I
have no identity.
For
forty-three years I’ve lived a lie…So just who is my father? Who? You can’t do this to me! I’ve got one foot in the grave, and now I’ll
die never knowing who my father is – or who my brother is, for that
matter.
The
tragic part is, I can’t tell a soul.
Judge doesn’t know, and I can’t tell him. I can’t bear the thought of him hating me. I’d be all alone, but I can’t focus on that
now. I’m the one who’s dying!
What will I tell my daughter…?
